Bulldogs - Puppies - History
Bulldogs have a long history and are said to have originated from fighting dogs used as warriors and guarding dogs. English Bulldogs appeared in Great Britain in the medieval. That time is characterized by a great love of the poor and the rich to bull-baiting. The breed acquired its name due to the bloody sport and entertainment. In 1835, the sport was outlawed and numerous Bulldogs found themselves out of work.
Some dogs were still used on farms, the outskirts of the cities, and everywhere where law was powerless. They performed in dog fighting, yet were replaced later by their relatives, Pit Bull Terriers. Though English Bulldogs were strong and courageous, they lacked agility and produced a far less effect on the public than other fighting dogs.
By the middle of the 19th century, English Bulldogs turned out to be on the edge of extinction. Breed lovers tried to preserve the legendary dog and started to breed out its stern qualities. The English Bulldog experienced a shift in its functions. It started to be used as a guard dog and a companion.
The true origin of the French Bulldog remains a mystery. According to a popular version the breed is the descendent of the English Bulldog. Yet, some people argue that the French Bulldog has a far more complex history. It is believed that breeders used the English Bulldog and the Toy Bulldog that was a fashion in Great Britain in the middle of the 19th century. Toy Bulldogs were probably crossed with terriers, Mops, and other breeds. The end result of these crossings was the French Bulldog.
American Bulldogs were developed from English Bulldogs. They helped settlers to cope with their duties. Breeders stressed working qualities of the dog paying little attention to appearance. Since there was no sole standard for the breed, the dogs were rather different in appearance. However, breed lovers have come to a certain agreement of what the American Bulldog should look like. Nowadays, there are a few types of the American Bulldog. These dogs differ from each other in appearance and personality traits. Yet, they retain a common quality of all Bulldogs - devotion to their owner and boundless courage.
