This variety of the breed is very close to the dogs used in bull baiting during the Middle Ages. These dogs are direct descendants of old English Mastiffs, which were renowned for their great power, endurance and fierce temperament. In old times, and they were set on bulls either for butcher or sport purposes. The prohibition of bull baiting put the breed on the brink of ruin.
